From the Director
Did you know that the MidYork Library System has over a MILLION items spread out over its 43 member libraries? I’m sure you do, as every month we ship in hundreds of books, DVDs, audiobooks, music CDs, etc. for our patrons to pick up at the circulation desk when our 20,000 items (in-house) just aren’t enough. But what do you do when you’re looking for that one thing that none of our libraries have on our shelves? Give up, right?
Well you COULD give up, OR you could place a request for an Inter-Library Loan! I know I made it seem like the literal tons of resources spread across dozens of libraries in Madison, Oneida, and Herkimer counties were endless, but our local(ish) offerings barely scratch the surface of what you can find out there. For example, even if we had a million books in the system, there’s still about 125 million books that have been printed throughout history, at least according to Google.
If you are having trouble finding an item in our catalog, then let a staff member know! They can get it shipped to you from any library in the world*! It might take a few extra days to receive this rare book or DVD or whatever it is, but we’ll do our best to get it into your hands.
You’re probably wondering about the cost of getting a book delivered from outside our system. To you, it’s free! We’ll take care of the shipping costs, just make sure you return it on time, as the other library sets the return date.
Inter-Library Loan requests aren’t that uncommon with about ten requests a month, but it’s just uncommon enough for me to justify advertising this often-overlooked service in our monthly newsletter. After all, ten checkouts of the thousands of items we circulate a month constitutes about a third of a percent of all that we do here. Surely that’s due to not enough folks knowing that this is an option!
Thank you for reading, and see you next month!

Highlights from last month

Toddler play date is bringing a bigger crowd every month, but the ball pit is still the favorite attraction. Fingerpainting day was also a big hit so if you missed it don’t worry, we’ll be doing it again! And to help out with the cold weather we made some cute snowman handwarmers.
