From the Director

There are so many things to be thankful for at the close of this often-overlooked End of Fiscal Year celebration, and if you want to skip the column this month, suffice it to say, I’m grateful for your support and generosity yet again. For a more detailed expression of gratitude, please keep reading!

First, I want to thank all of the voters in the Hamilton Central School District that approved our 4% budget increase for this year. Not only did our budget increase pass, but over 82% of you (450 out of 547, to be exact), supported our proposition. This has been the highest percentage of votes in support of our budget since 2018! Since we started supplementing our budget with a School District Proposition in 2010, this is the third-highest level of support you have provided. On average, we receive an approval rate of about 79%.

Your support means the world to all of us at the library, and we will continue to bring you the best materials, programs, and access to resources possible, while providing the best customer service to match. This portion of our budget supports our staff, building maintenance, collection development (online and in house), and so much more.

Our budget, however, is not complete with the $163,101 we receive directly from the School District Proposition. Our total budget is about double that amount, with another significant portion of almost $100,000 coming from the Village of Hamilton, leaving a little under $70,000 received from numerous sources. These sources include New York State, Madison County, the Villages of Madison, Brookfield, and Lebanon, private bequests, individual donations, and support from the Friends of the Library.

The last two sources of funding I mentioned above, individual donations and Friends of the Library, are ways for you, dear reader, to directly support the library beyond taxes. Last year, we received almost $5,800 in dozens of individual donations, ranging from a penny to hundreds of dollars. These donations can be in the form of ‘keep the change’ after paying for a photocopy, or gifts given in lieu of flowers to families of patrons who have passed away and are kind enough to include us as beneficiaries in their obituaries. Often, we do not know the reason behind donations, other times we know exactly why the Rotary Club donates hundreds of dollars every year (for books!). I would love to thank each and every donor in this column, but it would take too long to make a list. So instead of a list, here’s a paragraph of everyone that donated a check to us this last fiscal year!

Thank you to the Hamilton Rotary Club, Hamilton Community Chest, Bonnie and Gary Will, Myongsun Kong and William Peck, Howard, Martha, and Beth Adams, Gigliotti Cheese Factory, the Central New York Library Resources Council, Craig and Mary Brundage, Beatrice Little, Louisa Richards, John & Suzanne Golden, Frederick and Lucille Funke, Susan Beattie, Everett & Wynn Egginton, RuthAnn Loveless, Patricia and John Grossmann, Janet Little, Mark and Terry Monty, James and Linda Leach, Deborah White, Barbara Kershaw, Raymond and Cathy Madden, the Community Benevolent Foundation, Brian and Loretta Treffeisen, the Hamilton Club, Amm Family Partners LTD, Maura E. Tumulty and Rajit Singh Dosanjh, and Ellen L. Augusta.

That list above are ONLY the individuals and organizations that donated a check to the library, and does not include anyone that donated supplies or prizes for our annual Summer Reading Program -  that’s a paragraph for another day. It also does not include the folks that donate to the Friends of the Library fund, who are the fundraising arm of the Hamilton Public Library. Unfortunately I do not have a complete list of donors for the Friends as they are a separate entity with their own budget and Board of Trustees. I can only speak for what the Friends provide the library each and every year, which is a metric ton of support. Every program you attend is paid for by the Friends of the Library, to the tune of $5,000/year. They also purchase thousands of dollars of equipment for public use including but not limited to tables, chairs, computers, and shelving. And now, they even help pay for our landscaping! Thanks, Friends!

If you would like to donate to us, just stop in and make a donation! We accept cash and check in any denomination. If you would like to support the Friends of the Library, we can also accept that here at the circulation desk, just let us know it’s for the Friends. Note: As a 501(c)3, contributions to the Friends of the Library are tax deductible. You can also support the Friends by purchasing a book from the sale in our front room or making a donation during the weekly Saturday yoga class led by Catherine Cardelús, or attending any of their fundraising events.

Thank you so much for your support, and for subscribing to this newsletter. And Happy New Fiscal Year 2024-2025!
