From the Director
It’s been some time since I’ve written the Library Director column from my home office, but here we are, on Leap Day, and the Library is closed due to inclement weather, and I have a deadline to meet!
First, about closing. I understand that Hamilton has what many would refer to as a ‘dusting’ of snow, and that the Village Office is still open. There are many factors to consider when shutting down for the day, and while we have some staff members that could walk to work, we do not want to encourage everyone in our service area to travel if it can be avoided. Since Madison, Morrisville, and Brookfield schools have all closed for the day and Hamilton is on a two-hour delay, I felt it best for the safety of our patrons to close. I know by the time you’re reading this it may be 70 degrees, but the conditions in Oriskany Falls are really only appropriate for snowshoeing.
Speaking of springtime (kind of), we received some very exciting news regarding the gardens around our building! In the next few months, these gardens will receive a lot more attention than they have in years past, thanks to a grant from the Hamilton Community Chest and the Friends of the Library! Currently, our gardens are thriving, but in a way that does not create a welcoming environment and look for our facility. If we wait much longer, they might completely obscure our doors and sign! As much as we love The Secret Garden, it’s not exactly the look we are going for.
Thank you so much to the Hamilton Community Chest and to the Friends of the Library. Please consider donating to these wonderful groups if you don’t do so already. The Hamilton Community Chest is extremely generous not only with the Library but other area organizations as well. Our Friends group is the fundraising arm of the Hamilton Public Library, and without them we wouldn’t be able to have new bookshelves, nice gardens, new public computers, or even programs! I feel lucky to work in such a supportive community. For more information, visit hamiltoncommunitychest.org and https://hamiltonlibrary.org/friends/.
