Coming Soon: Linda R Evans

Linda R. Evans has been a lifelong resident of Sherrill, graduating from VVS in 1966. She earned a BS degree from SUNY Oswego in elementary education and K-12 art and taught first grade in Verona elementary for 5 1/2 years. After raising her two children, she returned to teaching elementary art in 1989 in Oneida. Since retiring in 2005, she is active in many clubs and organizations and teaches watercolor and drawing/pen and ink classes at the Sherrill library. She also teaches Ukrainian Egg decorating, and has a collection of over 150 Pysanka eggs. Her work has been on display in six area libraries, Kenwood and Vine restaurant, First Presbyterian Church in Cazenovia and the Heritage Family Medical Building in Cazenovia. Many of these paintings are the result of classes she still takes, class assignments during her watercolor classes, and techniques taught and shared with her students.

Friends of the Library

Pursapalooza is coming back this fall! The friends are hard at work collecting gently used purses and gently used jewelry to sell. If you would like to donate any items bring them to the library. And if you’re looking forward to the shopping mark your calendars for the first Sunday in November!

Library Landscape

Butterfly Garden Is Full of Life

Lisa Marchitelli, Programs & Events Coordinator, reports, "Sammy our Summer Snake has been a community project, for our All Together Now theme."

Sammy is a curvy line of vibrant hand-painted stones who winds through the butterfly garden.

Lisa and the children artists discovered new wildlife friends while creating the project.

"We had a Hummingbird Moth in the tall spikey purple/pink flowers! He was so cute! We also found many snails from large to speck size, a very long worm, a tiny hairy caterpillar, and many bees."

From the Director

And that’s a wrap, another Summer Reading Program is in the books (pun not intended). This year’s theme of ‘All Together Now’ ended up being the perfect title as patrons, staff, and businesses joined together to create, explore, play, and learn as a community. It’s a very exciting time to work in a library, and if you enjoy looking at spreadsheets (like me), it’s even better! Let the statistics and Thank Yous commence! Don’t worry, I’ll keep the spreadsheets to myself.

Throughout the months of July and August, over 90 patrons of all ages participated in our program by filling out bingo sheets and tracking their reading progress. Over 80 of those that signed up received free books, and dozens received some of our weekly prizes. Congrats! We hosted about 60 programs in July and August to over 1,000 attendees! From small crafts to big events, programs in-house and those held remotely at Madison Central School, there was truly something for everyone, and it seems like just about everyone showed up.

As for the reading part of it, y’all were extremely busy checking out items over the course of the program. We recorded two straight months of record-breaking checkouts of our items since 2020. While we’re used to a surge in activity over the Summer, it always feels good to have a new PR!

Oh right, I mentioned Thank Yous above.

  • First, thank you to the Friends of the Library. The Friends pay for all of our program supplies, performances, and snacks year-round, and show up to help volunteer at specific events.

  • Thank you also to all of the library staff for stepping up and helping with programs or simply just dealing with an influx of activity and questions over the summer. All of our job descriptions include ‘other duties as assigned,’ and the summer is truly when that part comes into play.

  • Speaking of staff, one staff member really stepped up during her first Summer Reading Program, our Events Coordinator, Lisa Marchitelli. Thank you so much, Lisa, for all of the preparation, organization, long hours, social media posts, ideas… the list goes on. Learning the job and jumping into the busiest season is no simple task. It is truly because of her that this program was a success.

  • Thanks also to our new volunteer Maude Brumbach Thomsen, who was a regular presence throughout the last two months.

  • Help also came from outside the library walls from multiple local businesses. Join me in thanking Shol’s Boutique, Ravenswood Comics, McDonald’s, Oliveri’s Pizzeria, Stewart’s Shops, and Maxwells Chocolates & Ice Cream.

Finally, as always, thank you for reading!

Highlights from last month

August was a very busy month for us. We painted rocks, did watercolor painting and even alcohol ink painting! The zoo mobile visited and we had an author talk with local author Thomas Brackett. To wrap it all up we had an end of summer pizza party to celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program. Thank you for all your participation in August!
